Over 40 Years of Island Flavors
Buzz’s Wharf Restaurant recently celebrated 40 years of operation, and is one of Maui’s oldest restaurants. As a landmark in Ma’alaea Bay Harbor, Buzz’s continues to greet and extend their ho’okipa (hospitality) to both newcomers and their loyal local and visitor clientele.
In 1967, Jerry & Eileen MacDonald opened Buzz’s Wharf Restaurant above the Ma’alaea Boat Club, where it still stands today. They shared 30 successful years in the restaurant business on Maui and Honolulu. In 1993, the MacDonald’s retired and the next generation took over. The American Cuisine with an Island flavor continues on. Mrs. Macdonald’s French Tahitian roots contributed to many of the unique menu items. Their signatures dish the “Markea Sweet Prawns Tahitian” being the most popular.
Eileen’s son, Enrique Braun-Ortega, discovered the New Caledonian farmed-raised prawn during a business trip to New Caledonia in 1992. He was hooked with the first bite. As a result, the spark was firmly ignited in his mind and his vision soon came to fruition. The pristine Pacific blue lagoons of the Coral Sea surrounding the west coast of New Caledonia would be the perfect environment to grow the exceptionally sweet prawns he could market worldwide. The first farm began production in 1993 and the first exports to the United States, starting in Hawaii, began in 1999.
Markea Prawns™ are used exclusively at Buzz’s Wharf for all of their
Shrimp dishes. The Prawns & Chips, Scampi, Prawns Cocktail, Seafood
Pasta, and a local favorite, The Shrimp Lover’s Platter served whole
with heads on, mmmmmmm, ono!
But it is Buzz’s signature dish, the “Sweet Prawns Tahitian” that will
leave you salivating and wanting to return for more. This mouthwatering
Markea Prawns™ entrée is butterflied and baked in the half-shell with
dill, butter, a splash of Vermouth and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
Not only will they melt in your mouth, customers have been known to
declare, “they’re better than lobsters!” This signature dish is served
for both lunch and dinner.
You can also whet your appetite with the Fresh Ahi sashimi, Coconut
Panko Fried Oysters, Buzz’s Famous Steamers and their signature Clam
Chowder and Onion Soups. Also on the menu, along with their featured
prawns, are Angus Beef Steaks, Alaskan King Crab Legs, Daily Fresh Fish
Specials, Herb-Crusted Prime Rib (Friday & Saturday Nights only)
and more.
In 2000, Marla Braun-Ortega, granddaughter of the MacDonald’s, joined
the family business after finishing college and working on the
Mainland. As the General Manager today, she continues to carry on the
family business with great success.
