Café O Lei Restaurant
As the light was fading on a Sunday evening, my friend and I walked into Café O‘Lei’s large dining area of dark wood tables and filmy drapes of magenta.

Cafeolei250.jpg From a fairly sophisticated wine list, I chose a King Estate Pinot Gris by the glass. The extensive sushi menu grabbed our attention right away; we chose a Red Dragon roll of spicy tuna and avocado which didn’t disappoint us. On our server’s recommendation, we tried the Manoa Lettuce Wrap. Butter lettuce leaves are ready to wrap around a blend of chicken tossed with water chestnuts, ginger, and a hoisin sauce that I found overwhelmingly sweet.

For an entrée, I chose the Blackened Mahi-Mahi. A generous serving of mahi came blackened perfectly with a refreshing papaya salsa and ginger butter sauce. This dish was a winner; complementary spicy, sweet, fresh, and savory ingredients all showed up well. My friend chose the Togarashi & Sesame Seared Ahi. Mounds of grated daikon radish were piled atop seared tuna fillets, spiced liberally with a wasabi aioli.

Prices were reasonable, service was efficient and courteous, and the meals all arrived within moments. It’s not a restaurant where I would want to linger indefinitely over an intimate dinner; the pace and turnover seemed too fast for that. But for excellent sushi and entrées rivaling those of high end restaurants, Café O‘Lei is a good bet.

We travel to Maui each year and this is now a two night dining place for us on each trip. I love the sashimi Tuna it is more than you expect and cooked to perfection. Sushi is above par but the wait sometimes is bothersome. Reasonable prices great service and staff, better then most upscale restaurants on the Island I have visited.
