Lahaina Grill
Triple Berry Pie

Lahaina Grill, known until recently as David Paul’s Lahaina Grill, is well known for complexly constructed, deeply flavorful, fresh New American cuisine. Their service is second to none, and while there is no ocean view, the bustling restaurant manages to fill tables night after night. Once the sun sets, after all, it’s all about the food. Saving room for dessert may be difficult for you, but it is worth it.

LG-TripleBerry.jpgThe pastry chef in residence is absolutely fantastic. Filling up on rolls is nearly impossible to do on Maui—the extra clean air is not conducive to bread making—but at Lahaina Grill, it is more than a probability. And if you need incentive to make dessert a priority, just take a stroll back to the pastry case and feast your eyes.

We like the lime tart and the chocolate cake aptly named The Road to Hana (order it to see the pun), but we are singling out their deceptively simply named Triple Berry Pie for special praise.

After the parade of elaborate presentations delivered to you for your preceding courses, you may feel let down by the simple presentation of a pie slice on a swirl of raspberry sauce with a generous dollop of whipped cream. However, once you cut in with your fork and lift the indigo filling to your tongue, you will understand why this is a must-order.

The berries—raspberries, blueberries, and black currants—start dancing on your tongue immediately. The sweet, tart, and bright flavors, blanketed by a perfectly flakey crust flavored with sour cream involve every taste bud and allow you to really savor each bite. But everything sparkly is mellowed by a little crème de cassis to smooth, and tapioca to add a softer texture to the dessert. Molly usually chooses this restaurant for her birthday celebration, because “Triple Berry Pie is the best birthday cake on Maui.” Highly recommended.
